Landcruiser 79 Series Tray & Canopy Design
This project showcases how we engineered a modular 4WD tray and canopy system that reduces fabrication time, ensures consistent build quality, and fits seamlessly to your vehicle.
Project Outline
The customer came to me with the requirement to design a custom tray and canopy to fit all types of 4WD vehicles. The aim was to reduce fabrication time and increase consistency in build quality. Using similar existing designs on the market we collaborated on which elements were important from not just an aesthetic look, but a functional one.
The biggest challenge with this project was the tapered rear toolbox & rear light enclosure. The angles required a lot of detailed sheet metal design and simulations to check locks and door openings.
Other challenges presented themselves with hardware and fit-outs. The customer wanted all mounting holes pre-drilled but certain items like locking draw slides had different mounting patterns depending where you sourced them. Other small issues like fridge heights meant smaller canopies could not use the larger fridges as they would not fit in.
Another challenge was the electrical layout. The use of a slimline battery and custom mounts to fit the inverter behind the control panel maximised the usable space inside the canopy.
I made the call to standardise the tray sizes in increments of 50mm for the length and 25mm for the width. Underbody toolboxes, mudguards, light enclosures and the pull out tray are additional add on options based on the above sizing. Canopy heights were in increments of 15mm.
All purchased parts were modelled for design accuracy. This provides a clear design intent and realistic installation layouts that work.

FAQs
How do you make sure the canopy and tray design will fit my vehicle correctly?
We use 3D scanned models of the specific vehicle. The recommended way is to purchase the vehicle brand new and register after any modifications have been made.
Can your designs be adapted later if I want to add additional items?
We can make design adjustments partway through, however the complexity of the design can sometimes impact what is within scope to change. Simple changes are fine but major changes cannot be accommodated without additional cost.
How involved can I be in the design process?
You can be as involved as you want. Send pictures, hand-written notes on napkins or videos and we will accommodate your needs.
Can you make changes if I want to adjust the design partway through?
Yes of course! We can carry out updates years later if required because of supplier changes or updated manufacturing capabilities.
Do you provide 3D models or layouts for me to review before fabrication?
Yes approvals for concept drawings and final designs are always send through. 3D models can be provided at additional cost.
Do your custom tray and canopy designs meet compliance and registration requirements?
Yes of course! We can carry out updates years later if required because of supplier changes or updated manufacturing capabilities.
